ST. JACOBS is located in Southwest Ontario, just north of Waterloo. It is a popular location for Tourism, due to its quaint village appearance, retail focus & Mennonite heritage. Waterloo Region is still home to the largest population of Old Order Mennonites in Canada, particularly in the areas around St. Jacobs & Elmira. They are often seen on the local roads using their traditional horse & buggy transportation: many also use horses to pull the implements in their farm fields.
The Home Hardware Company, founded in 1963 & still operating, can trace its roots all the way back to the 1880s in St. Jacobs.
VILLAGE OF MILLBANK is the heart of the Mennonite Community in Perth County. Imagine…No roads, – just Indian trails when immigrants arrived in the forest. They soon built a dam, saw mill & grist mill by the bridge on Main Street – thus the name Millbank (a Mill on the river bank). Within a few years Millbank had a store, post office, hotels & other business including a foundry, employing 40 persons.
